Port wine is also called Vinho do Porto, Porto or Oporto and is a sweet Portuguese wine that is fortified in Douro Valley of Portugal. People usually drink port wine as a dessert wine. There are various types of port wine available where you find a few mentioned here;
Vintage port is made for aging. It has to spend 2 years in oak before getting bottled; and usually gets its best taste after 15 years. There are also some wines that improve with time; and the more aged it is, the more expensive it is. This is why these wines are considered to be the aristocrats of port world.
Single-Quinta Vintage port that comes from one vintage year but is usually not good enough to be declared a vintage wine. Its grapes hail from a single vineyard; which is unlike vintage port grapes which are blends from the best sites.
Late Bottled Vintage is not true Vintage Ports. These wines are blended from many years and then aged for a maximum of 10 years in oak. This makes the wine resemble well aged Vintage and can sometimes be very good to drink.
Ruby port is a sweetish and full bodied wine that is aged for a short time. This is a drink that can be rather harsh at times.
Tawny port differs from Ruby port in the amount of its maturing time in oak. The best producers of tawny ports can be as complex and fine as vintage port. Its age is specifically marked on the label and may cost between 10 and 30 pounds.
White port is usually drunk as an aperitif. This wine is not very popular in UK but is popular in both Portugal and France.
